How we became a homeschooling family 09/25/2011
It all started with a simple question from my mother-in-law. I just hate when she questions me about things I have not had a chance to think through first. She asked me which preschool we were going to put our 3 year old in. What? Whichpreschool? I was thinking to myself I am not putting my child in preschool. Who says I have to put her in a preschool? That would mean I would have to get a job to pay for it and I just can not make sense out of that scenario. Go get a job so I can pay someone else to watch my child. I was already doing "preschool" things with her at home. We were playing...she was learning. Simple and free. Not to mention all the other added benefits of being with my child 24/7. I read everything and anything that had to do with homeschooling. I knew it was the best and my husband was on board so we took off. We spent my daughter's first 6 years playing and exploring our community, backyard and kitchen. You should see all my pictures! My two children spent 7 months (Nov. 2010 - May 2011) in Government school and once summer hit we began planning our homeschooling journey once again and I was thrilled!! God had shown me a lot while they were in government school and it was a wake up call in so many ways for me. I had taken for granted the freedom and flexibility that homeschooling had to offer. I had missed out on the bonding with my kids. My 7 year old had begun believing his teacher and peers were superior to his father and I. My son had spent more time behind the computer screen and watching movies at school than he did at home. By the way, they never sent letters home asking for permission to allow our children to watch certain movies. My children were not my own and I hated that feeling. Both of my children did well academically in government school. I realized it was the consistency they had there. They went everyday and had the same routines. We haven't had a routine since my son out grew nap time. I realized that for our family to make homeschooling work again we needed to be more consistent. So thanks to that little adjustment, we are having a great school year!! I love homeschooling!! 2 Comments | LanaLana is an energetic mom with 2 great kids.
